You’re Invited: Show Your Pride at the 2005 State Fair

Pride of NY ad

The “Great New York State Fair” is the premier entertainment and educational showcase for New York’s food and agricultural industry. Nearly one million consumers visit this nationally recognized 12-day summer event at the Empire Expo Center in Syracuse.

Each year, the Department organizes an exhibit which features New York State-produced and processed food products. The exhibit presents these products in a supermarket setting.

Pride of New York members are offered the opportunity to display their food products by supplying a small but representative sample that is stocked on the exhibit shelves. The exhibit contains mock freezer and cooler units to feature product that is normally sold in frozen or refrigerated form.

If you are interested in displaying your product next year, please contact Phil Bibbo at phillip.bibbo@ agmkt.state.ny.us or by calling (518) 457-6773.

Our Pride Goes National - And So Can You!

Pride of New York is on its way to becoming nationally recognized – helping members find an ever-expanding range of markets for their products.

How? The Pride Program has a powerful, new marketing campaign aimed at retail food buyers, distributors, wholesalers and brokers across the country. Ads are telling buyers about the special quality of Pride produce and processed products – and reminding them that consumers prefer and look for local products to help support farm families and small businesses.

The highly targeted ads are running in all the major food industry trade journals – including Supermarket News, Produce News, Produce Business, Modern Grocer and others. Total circulation tops 100,000 of the most influential readers in the business.

How can you benefit? Use the logo!

The Pride Program is growing by leaps and bounds. Consumer and retailer awareness is rapidly increasing. We’re telling consumers to look for the Pride logo wherever they shop, from farmers’ markets to convenience stores to major chain retailers. During this holiday season, there is much for us to celebrate about the Pride of New York Program and its members.

Today, the program has over 1,200 members with new enrollments coming in daily. The scope of the Program also has grown tremendously, as have the number of special projects and events in which members may participate.

We know you share our pride in this growth and the Program’s determined efforts to help all its members grow their businesses.

So, thank you for being part of New York’s pride.

We’re looking forward to an even better 2005!

Survey Says: Use the Pride Logo To Boost Business

One of the greatest benefits in the Pride of New York Program is the ability for members to identify the quality products they grow, produce and sell by using the Pride of New York logo.

Use of the Pride of New York logo on products tells people that the product is produced or processed locally. This is a very important message, based on consumer study research.*

Included in the findings among those surveyed:

• Seven out of 10 respondents said it was very or extremely important that their purchase support a local family farm and was locally grown or produced.

• More than 60% of households said that it was very or extremely important that a small local company make the products they are purchasing or that the products are grown in their state.

• 80% of respondents were very or extremely interested in purchasing locally grown or produced products from a grocery store.

• More than 60% would increase their locally grown purchases if more products were available in their area.

What are you waiting for? Use the Pride of New York emblem on your products. Call 800.554.5201 to receive the Pride of New York logo artwork and usage guidelines.

It’s New York’s way of guiding consumers to the fine, locally grown agricultural products and processed foods from Pride of New York members – products that consumers want to purchase.

Wal-Mart Promotes Pride of New York Across the State

Pride of NY Showcase image

Commissioner Rudgers kicked off a week-long Pride of New York showcase (Oct. 26-Nov. 1), featuring New York produce at 27 Wal-Mart Supercenters throughout the State.

At the New Hartford Supercenter (Oneida County), Pride of New York members, industry representatives and legislators enjoyed bountiful displays of Pride products, enjoyed samples and received recipes featuring Pride of New York products.

“The Pride of New York Showcase reminds us why the Pride of New York Program uses ‘Our Pride is Inside’ to describe the outlook of its more than 1,200 members whose hard work produces food for our tables that is second to none,” Commissioner Rudgers said.

Dennis Randolph, Wal-Mart’s Northeast Regional Territory Manager said, “Wal-Mart is always seeking ways to offer our customers the finest local produce and food products available. The Showcase of Pride of New York products is a great service to our customers who know that buying New York supports their neighbors and the local economy.”

Pride of New York is focusing much of its efforts on retailers this year, trying to obtain more markets for Pride of New York products, while increasing consumer awareness of the program. The Wal-Mart promotion featured New York State products and in-store displays, including New York apples, potatoes, squash, cabbage and pumpkins.

Participating Pride of New York members were:

• Apples sourced from throughout the State by New York Apple Sales, located in Hudson (Columbia County).

• New York potatoes from Bushwick Commission in Farmingdale (Nassau County). New York round white potatoes were specially packaged for Wal-Mart in 10-pound, red and white bags that bear the Pride of New York emblem.

• New York squash, cabbage and pumpkins were provided by Torrey Farms of Elba (Genesee County) and Turek Farms of King Ferry (Cayuga County).

Pride Carries the Banner to New York Retailers

From time to time, the Pride of New York Program is invited by member retailers to assist with the promotion of available New York products in their stores.

We welcome such opportunities from our members by providing them with the necessary point-of-purchase materials for their shelves and displays, free of charge.

While the Pride Program does not arrange for distribution of New York products to retailers, we can assure you that we will continue to assist with the requests we receive for sources of specific New York products and encourage our member retailers to utilize the signage we have available.
